WORDS THAT FORM AN ALLEGED LIBEL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, Yesterday. A case which is arousing considerable local interest is being heard in the Supreme Court to-day. lan. Simson, candidate for Hawke's Bay at the general election, is suing the Tribune (Hastings) for alleged libel in publishing the following: "Flash from candidate's speech:' When referring to another 'candidate this person (meaning plaintiff) comes among you clothed with the Government brand. If he had his deserts he should have received it before now." Plaintiff claims £2OOO damages. The defence denies that the words were published falsely or maliciously, or that the words (meant that plaintiff had been guilty of a criminal offence for which he was liable, on conviction, to a term of imprisonment, and that he was unfit to represent the electors in .Parliament. But if it is proved that the words are defamatory, then the defendant company says (hoy are, in the Kctibc alleged, tnie, and will bring evidence to prove that plaintiff had been twice convicted of assault.
