RIFLE SHOOTING.

DOMINION MEETING. EXTRA MATCHES ADDED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Trentham, Last Night. There is every promise of fine weather for the opening of the Dominion Rifle Association meeting to-morrow. Already there are a goodly number of competitors in camp, and the Council have decided to put a number of extra matches on to-morrow and Thursday, so that competitors can have practice. The first '< two days will be devoted to the service teams matches, of which there are seven. Up to the present there are only four j entries for the teams series, viz., Nelson Regiment (infantry), Suburbs Rifle Club, Opaki Rifle Club and Karori Rifle Club. The teams are 12 men, with a commander, and among the matches is the Islington Competition for the silver cup presented by His Excellency, in which the teams liave to march twelve miles and attack a position, represented by targets. The entries for the individual events, which commence at eight on Friday, are 307 up to tli" present, but it is expected there will be about 325 by j the time the competitions commence. Most of those who took part in the Wai'rarapa meeting have arrived on the .ground, and among the cracks at practice to-day were James Loveday, R. King, Marenzi and several others. A parade will take place to-morrow at 8.15, and at 9 o'clock the meeting will open. The extra match will be at 800 yds. Although entries are so much smaller than last year the time will not be curtailed, as only two ranges will oe used,'instead of ■ three. The camp is laid out in the latest military fashion, all the pathways being outlined with white stones. This makes getting about the carrip at night much easier than formerly.

Last night Major Sandford received a telegram from his son, stating that the Christchurch Defence Rifle Club had won the Champion Teams' Match at the South Island rifle meeting (held at Redcliffs), also that Captain King had won the championship, and that Rifleman E. F. Sandford was fifth. This is the second time Captain King has been South'lsland champion, and he seems to be evergreen, like Arthur Ballinger. The same club won the teams' match last year., The 50 guinea Watkin's Shield goes with the teams' match.
