FUN AND FROLIC AT THE PINES.
LAST EVENING'S ENTERTAINMENT. New Plymouth's fine stretch of beach at the East. End Bathing Reserve is always attractive, but when in addition to its natural charms a whole round of wholesome artificial pleasures are thrown ■«n, as was the case last night, it is at once the most popular resort in the town. Commencing yesterday afternoon, an extensive and varied entertainment was provided by the East End Improvement Committee, in the shape of all manner of sports for the rising generation, in which swimming, the greasy boom, the "American Pony," and surfing figured prominently. The evening's amusement took the form .of an al fresco display of moving pictures, and a side-show in the shape of a dub-swinging exhibition by Mr. T. Burrows. It was a happy, goodnatured crowd that watched the' screening of the films, and it numbered hundreds upon hundreds. Without a doubt evening entertainments on the beach have come to stay, an<] it is gratifying for the energetic committee of "beach-' combers" to see their efforts at popularising the beach and at the same time furnishing funds to carry on their praiseworty work meet with such splendid success. New Plymouth will await with pleasure the advent of the next evening's frolic and entertainment.
