GENERAL TELEGRAMS.

THE DEFENCE SYSTEM. By Telegraph—Press Association. ~, Wellington, Monday!. Several youths were proceeded against in the Magistrate's Court to-day for refusing to take the oath of allegiance, as required by the Defence Act. Two of the defendants were fined 40s, to be reduced to 5s if the oath is taken within seven days, with the option of three days' imprisonment.

STRIKE OF FISHERMEN. Auckland, Monday. In, consequence of a disagreement between Auckland fishermen and the wholesale dealers, about three hundred men are idle, and a large number of boats laid Up. The fishermen want 2s 6d a dozen, and dealers offer 2s.

CHESS PRIZES. Napier, Monday. The brilliancy prizes at the chess congress were awarded to James (Wellington) 1, Jones (Masterton) 2, Jourdain (Napier) third and fourth, and Grierson (Auckland) fifth.

THE MONOWAI DELAYED. Napier, Monday. The Monowai, from Gisbome, arrived too late to connect with the south bound express, and a protest to the company was signed by about fifty passengers against such delays.

WELLINGTON FERRY BOATS. Wellington, Monday. The Harbor Ferries Company has offered to sell the steamers Duchess, Awarua and Cobar to the Eastbourne Borough Council for £21,300. It is understood the offer in its present form will not be entertained, and that the company intends to increase fares to meet the increased expenditure caused by the recent agreement with the employees.

GISBORNE BAND CONTEST. Gisbome, Monday. The North bland fifteenth band contest opened this afternoon in glorious Weather. The bands paraded the town and then proceeded to the Park, where an official reception was held. There was a large attendance, and the massed bands played 'The Conqueror" under the conductorship of Lieutenant Herd. This evening the cornet and euphonium solos will be taken.

BURGLARY AT HASTINGS. Hastings, Monday. The business premises of T. Morgan, wine and spirit merchant, were entered by burglars at 2 o'clock this morning. The thieves entered the office at the rear of the buildings by cutting a hole in a window and unfastening the latch. A desk containing £5 I2s 6d was rifled, but the money was left intact. Eight or nine bottles of whisky were taken. The police are investigating the case.

RAILWAY REVENUE. Wellington, Monday. Mr. Millar informed a Post representative that the railway revenue for the ten months of the years exceeds the esti-' mate by £7OOO. The estimate for the year was £3,525,000. He states that the actual revenue by March 31 will be not less than £3,600,000, while the percentage of expenditure to revenue will probably be less, certainly not higher, than in the previous year.
