BRISBANE TRAMWAYS STRIKE. ASSUMING A MORE SERIOUS PHASE. By GaMe—Press Association—Copyright. Brisbane, January 26. The tramway strike is assuming a more serious phase, and threatens to spread. A quantity of explosives were found on the line to Bulimba. and a large stone jambed in the points in another place. The Commissioner of Police has received threatening letters from sympathisers with the strikers. The, wharf laborers ceased work temporarily, paraded the streets, and carried a resolution that the waterside workers were prepared to assist in a general strike if necessary to force the tramway company to recognise the men's demands. A deputation of the Parliamentary Labor Party waited on the Home Secretary and Minister of Railways, and asked them to enforce the section of the Tramways Act providing for an efficient service. The Minister stated that they were officially unaware of the trouble, and promised to consider if any action was possible. Received 27, 1 a.m. Brisbane, January 26. Man unions have appointed delegates to the conference on Sunday to discuss the tram strike, with power to vote for a general strike if it is considered expedient.
A DEMAND CONCEDED. Adelaide, January 26. The protracted strike of builders' laborers has ended, the employers conceding the demand for ten shillings a day. BIRMINGHAM CONFERENCE. Received 27, 1 a.m. London, January 26. The Birmingham Conference decided to vote £6OOO per annum, which is the extent of the payment the members had received from the Labor Party towards the cost of a Labor newspaper. Resolutions were carried in favor of the right to strike, and condemning the employment of soldiers in connection with strikes. Until the Osborne judgment is reversed, all trades unions are advised to defy the law. A STRIKE OF CARTERS. London, January 23. Three-fourths of the carters employed by the Great Northern Railway in London have struck, owing to the dismissal of a comrade for refusing to do porter's work.
