UNIVERSITY SENATE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Tuesday. A strenuous debate was occasioned at the meeting of the Senate to-day by the motion of Mr. James Allen to the effect that the Senate arrange an annual conference of representatives of the professorial boards of the affiliated institutions, to be held in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin at times to be fixed by the Senate. The mover said all the m'otion aimed at was making the consultations-of the.' Senate with the professors permanent. One result would be the facilitating of a great amount of the detailed worfci the Senate had to deal with. Professor J. MacMillan Brown said the proposal would result in inconveniences, and the awkwardness and illogical aspects of work under the proposal would be hugely increased. Mr. Allen's proposal ignored the large constituency of graduates and the governing bodies. He moved an amendment to the effect that questions relating to the definition of subjects or examinations or curriculum be referred to members of the college staffs, with the view that where conflict occurred a conference of the said teachers might be arranged, and that all questions relating to the constitution, degrees, etc., where opinion is equally divided in the Senate be referred to a referendum of th«'members of the staffs, governing bodies, and convocations of the colleges. The discussion is proceeding.
