AUSTRALIANS' FINE RECOVERY.
FIVE WICKETS FOR 360.
CARTER'S RECORD SOORE,
By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 16, 7.15 p.m. Adelaide, January 16.
The third test match was resumed in delightful weather before an attendance of 6000. The wicket is still in admirable order for run-getting. ( Foster and Barnes opened the bowling and four from the former's initial over brought the 100 up in 99 minutes. Bardsley completed his 50 off Barnes. At first runs came steadily, good Hitsi being cut by Bardsley off Barnes, and a hit to square leg by Carter off Foster to the boundary. Foster pegged away at Bardsley's legs, and at last liowled him off the pads. Bardsley was batting 128 minutes and hit five fours. —Two for 122. '
Hill reached double figure< off eight balls, two straight hits oil' Bai'iies travelling to the boundary. Douglas immediately replaced Barnes, and Hill drove him to the boundary. Foster bowled three leg theory overs, which Hill allowed to pass unheeded. In the former's next over, he glanced a ball to the boundary. Five more off the over made 150 in 156 minutes. s
Hitch relieved Foster, eleven coming from his first over, seven of them to Hill for two straight hits. At the, luncheon adjournment, the total stood „at 174—Carter 28, Hill 37. On resumption, Foster and Barnes b'owled. The batsmen were content with ten singles before Hill snicked Foster, to the boundary., In the same over Hill, with 47 to his credit, was nearly out in the Same way as in the first innings. Smith whipped the ball back splendidly, but Hill swung his bat round in time and beat him.
• Hitch lrad an over, whieh yielded two fours to Carter. Hill with a leg hit off Poster reached 50 in 80 minutes; Barnes had a fruitless over with a new ball, and then IJouglas and Beanie bowled.
Carter twice cut Hearnc to the pickets, the first stroke giving him 50 in 135 minutes. When Carter was 50 and Hill 63 one should have .been run out, as both were at one «nd after a too risky call by 'Hill. For once Hobbs returned wildly, Hill got home and Carter scrambled in at the other end before the wicket-keeper could get the ball to the bowler. A return to the bowler in the first place must have meant a wicket. Runs came surely but not furiously, chiefly off Hearnc, and 250 was hoisted in 242 minutes. Carter, with a pair of tfs off Hearne, passed 60, his record score for test matches.
Woolley replaced Douglas, and in, hi« second over Carter was caught at the wickets. He had played a splendid, resolute innings, without a chance. He batted for 176 minutes, and hit eight fours. He received a great ovation.— Three for 279.
