The Third Test
AUSTRALIANS' CALAMITOUS START.
FOSTER'S DEADLY BOWLING.
By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 12, S p.m. Adelaide, January 12 The third test match was begun in warm weather and before an attendance of 9000 people. Hill won the toss, and began batting on an excellent wicket. Kelleway and Bardsley opened to Foster and Barnes. After a single each, Bardsley cut Barnes to the boundary. Foster, in this third over, bowled Kelleway. 1 for 6. The score was unalteied in Barnes' next over. Then Bardsley was snapped at the wicket.
Hordern and Ransford batted cautiously. When 6 Ransford had retired temporarily, owing to a severe blow on the left thumb from Foster. Armstrong next hit two fours o!T Barnes, who at 3'2 was replaced. Foster bowled splendidly. None of the batsmen could hit him. After bowling 11 overs for eight runs, Hearne gave him a spell. At the luncheon adjournment the total was 45 for 85 minutes' play, the bowling being very (inc. Ilordern had simply blocked it, with the object of wearing it down. Foster and Barnes bowled after luncheon. Runs came more rapidly. Armstrong hit each bowler to the boundary. and was then bowled off the pads by Foster. Armstrong batted soundly for 59 minutes and hit four fourers. 3 for (>5.
Trui'flpev's second shot was a fine cover hit to the boundary off Barnes, Hordern drove the same bowler to the boundary. Then he was easily caught at square leg. He was in 103 minutes, sedulously stonewalling. Five for 94. The next ten minutes were disastrous. Hall had two balls, and off the second he was magnificently stumped by Smith, who brought back the ball a foot from the leg side. Five, for 88. Three balls settled Minnett, who was bowled by a beauty. Foster then had five wickets for 23 runs.
Matthews was the next. Each batsman hit four. Then Matthews was easily caught behind the bowler. Seven for 97. Four byes completed the 100 for 145 minutes' play. Cotter had a merry life, which included a sixer into the members' pavilion off Barnes. In the same over he was yorked. Eight for 113.
Ransford resumed after the tea adjournment, when the score stood at 125 for 9 wickets.
| The innings was soon finished, Douglas getting Carter in the slips in the first over after the tea adjournment, after relieving Barnes. The calamitous innings occupied 197 minutes. There was no excuse for the Australians. Foster bowled magnificently, being always accurate and often "Swinging the width of the wickets. Nevertheless the batting was nerveless, lacking dash. A forcing player might have made a lot of difference. The fielding was close and brilliant, kmith at the wickets was especially smart. His stumping of Hill was a masterpiece.
Bowling analysis: s Foster, five for 36; Barnes, three for 71; Douglas, one for 7; Hearne, none for 6; Hitch, one for two.
The Englishmen had an hour to bat. Hobbs and Rhodes went in against the bowling of Cotter and Hordern. They soon showed how true the wicket was by forcing off strikes against Cotter, each batsman driving him for four. Hobbs jumped to Hordern and hit him down on the ground, but Rhodes was not so comfortable. A half hour's play produced 28. At 39 Hordern changed ends, Hell e way relieving Cotter. Rhodes, Rhodes was still troubled by slows, but worried himself out of the trouble. He took 45 minutes to make 10. Hobbs, when 25, skied Hordern, but the ball fell safely behind mid-oil'. At, 43 Matthews replaced Hordern, and appealed confidently for leg-before against Hobbs, but the umpire ruled against him. Matthews was bowling a fine length, and kept the batsmen quiet, and Rhodes nearly returned a ball to him. They played out time, when the total was 49. Both batted soundly and confidently, and never looked to be in serious trouble. Scores:— AUSTRALIA—First Innings.
