MR. H. B. IRVING IN "HAMLET." GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR SCHOLARS. The J. C. Williamson, Ltd., management have now definitely arranged for the appearance in New Plymouth on Monday, January 22, of England's celebrated actor. Mr. H. B. Irving, .and his own complete London company, i„ Shakespeare's famous tragedy, -Hamlet" Ihe occasion will doubtless prove the most important event in the local theatrical history. * In order to encourage the works of Shakespeare the J. C. Williamson, Ltd management are offering in Auckland and Wellington, prizes for essays on •Hamlet.' For children attending SC f °,." nder sixteeu years of age, prizes of £2 2s and £1 Is are being given, and for students over that age prizes of £3 5s and £2 2s. These competitions are open to residents of New Plymouth, and they can send in their efforts to the manager of Mr. H. B. Irving's company, Auckland, or, better still, they can first witness Mr. Irving's representation of the melancholy Prince of Denmark, and then forward their essays to Wellington where the competition will be open until February 3. Mr. Irving received a great demonstration on his initial appearance in Now Zealand, when he was greeted by a record house, and at every performance hundreds have nightly been unable to obtain admission. Already interest is very keen in Mr. [lrving's appearance here, and the box office agents have been literally besieged with enquiries in reference to the booking arrangements. The plans will be opened at Collier's on Thursday. January 18.
