MILITARY TOURNAMENT
AT PALMERSTON NORTH. By Tolegraph—Press Association. Palmerston North, Last Night. After getting through their preliminary heats on Saturday the New Zealand Grand Military and Naval Tournament J concluded its seventh annual gathering to-day in fine but windy weather. The tournament, which had been managed by the Manawatu Mounted Rifles successfully, was this year taken over by the Wellington District military authorities with a general committee, including all arms. General Godley, Colonels Robinil Collins and Chaytor, and most of tha members of the General Staff were proa ent, and teams representing nearly ever! district in New Zealand. The variolic' visiting corps became very popular with the crowd', but especially the South Can- 1 terbury Mounted Rifles, who came here with 14 wins to their credit, and won the cockade fight and Lloyd-Lindsay as squads, besides individual events. Today their horses were up to as many tricks as their riders, and gave side ahows between competitions. There were seven squads in the Lloyd-Lindsay event, when swordsmanship and tent-pegging events,''] etc., had fields of up to 45. Following were the results:— Field Artillery.—D. Physical Drill (silver challenge cup).— Wellington City Rifles 1, Invercargill City Guards 2, Auckland Infantry 3. Wellington Rifles have now won the cup

Engineers and Auckland College Rifles A team (equal) 1, Auckland College B team 3. ~ Tug-o'-war.—Royal New Zealand Artillery 1, D. Battery 2. At the conclusion of the events, General Godley presented the Territorial decoration to Lieut.-Col. Pringle (Palmerston North), commanding the 6th Regiment Mounted Rifles, and also the 20 years' service medal. Sergeant B. Halpin (Palmerston North Rifles) vras decorated with the long service medal, and Hare Pakena and Te Awe Awe received the New Zealand war medal for service under Major Kemp. Sergt.-Major Da vies, who received the Championship Cup and Shield for physical drill on behalf of the Wellington City Guards, has just completed 46 years of service, and is retiring. The whole tournament lvas been exceptionally well conducted, and is regarded as a great success.
