ANOTHER "HOPE"
JIM BARRY ARRIVES. FIVE FIGIITS OX HAND. Auckland, December 20. Jim Barry, the well-known American heavy-weight boxer, accompanied by his brother, ".Mike" Barry, is a through passenger to Sydney by the Ma ram a to-day. Barry, who is a modest, unassuming young fellow, scales 2001b, and is twentyfive years of age. He is under contract to Mr. Mcintosh, and has signed for live lights, his prospective opponents bein» Sam McVea, Bill Lang, Jack Lester. "Porky" Flynn. and Sam Langford, the "Boston Tar Baby." Langford's is the last of the contests arranged. The boxer, who reports himself to lie in splendid condition, has been working hard in the stokehold on the voyage across, and expects to he readv to enter the ring three weeks after his'arrival in. Sydney. He is one of the few "white hopes" at present in sight with anything like a record, and although practically a youngster, lm.s fought no less than 150 fight, ami of these lias got the verdict in all but seven. He has met Langford on no less than nine occasions, and was only beaten once when the "Tar Baby" knocked him out in sixteen rounds at Los Angeles, while he got two newspaper decisions against the colored freak. Two years ago he met Sam McVea in Paris, and after the light had cone fifteen rounds lie knocked his opponent out, but was disqualified for hitting as they broke away, lie is eonlideiit of his ability to beat all the boxers mentioned except. Langford. and modestly explains that he expects to give his old opponent the fight of his life. After his contract in Sydney is finished, Barry will return to New Zealand, and' if Millicient inducement oilers will meet anyone his weight. ' '
