THE BAPTIST CHURCH.

SUNDAY SCHOOL ANNIVERSARY. The Gill Street Church held their Sunday School anniversary sefvicea yesterday, morning, afternoon and evening, Rev. Frank Hales, of Invercargill, being the preacher for the day. The church was tastefully decorated with ferns and flowers, and the school was arranged on gallery seats on the platform. There was special snging, largely by the children, and very well given, under he leadership of Mr. W. C. Coleman. Miss Mabel Ambury was at t,he organ, and was assisted by two violinists, Miss B. Hunt and Mr. L, Goodacrc. Nearly all the hymna were taken from "The Sunday School Hymnary," edited by Mr. Carey Bonner. The book should be Still more widely used. The selection given was most appropriate for a/ Sunday school gathering. Mr. Hales addresses were: In the morning, from shepherd psalm, "The Lord is my shepherd"; in the afternoon he took a rose ds his emblem, and, as we may, text, and drew lessons therefrom for the children. He said he was taken with the abundance of flowers m New Plymouth. So we may presume that guided him in choosing his subject. In the evening the text was from Psalm 144, 12. From this the preacher showed that while we desire growth, strength and beauty for our young people, it is above all these good things iti the spiritual and moral realm, as shown in strong and beautiful characters. In addition to the singing above mentioned, Mißs Stewart gave two solos, "The Man,:of Sorrows," in the morning, and in the evening "The Sinner and the Song," with a quartette echo which had a very touch.ing effect. The congregations were good all day, and the collections were in aid v of the school funds.
