THE ELTHAM CARNIVAL.
Nothing ,is more remarkable in' the field of sport than the njanner in which the great annual Axemen's Carnival at Eltham lias' gone on steadily gaining in popularity, while almost every other branch of athletics has been losing ground. For {he past eight years' th« Axemen's Carnival on Boxing day and the following day, has proved easily the principal attraction during the Christmas holidays, and judging bv present indications will continue to be so. This year the entries are right up to record mark, and include nractically all' the proven chamnions. Mr. Chas. O'Rourke, the all-round champion of the South Island, is competing, and many will attend specially to witness the encounter betwon Dave Pretty and the redoubtable Southerner. As heretofore further improvements are being made to the grounds, additional facilities for handling the hucre crowd in the dining-room, and, altogether, everything the energetic directors 'believed may be necessary for the convenience and enjoyment of com- . petitor or patron has been attended to.
