PERSONAL.
A London cablegram reports the death of Sir George L. Lewis, the famous lawyer. Mr. Schilscy, examiner for the Trinity College of Music, has awarded the Governor's medal to Miss Alison Mary Tuoker, who was adjudged to be the best candidate in the senior divison, practical work, in New Zealand for the year Dunedin wire. Mrs. Ann Mary Okcy, relict of the late Mr. Edward Okey, died yesterday afternoon at Mr N. Okey's residence, Frankley road, aged 82. The deceased lady was born at Stroud, Gloucestershire, England, and left that town en route for New Zealand in 1856, arriving in New Plymouth in April, 1857. She has resided in this town ever since. In common with the early settlers the late Mrs. Okey suffered the hardships of the Maori war. When the military authorities ordered all the women to Nelson, Mrs. Okey decided not to obey the order, saying that her place was by her husband's side, and that where he could live also could she live. When the women were mustered Mrs. Okey was absent, and the authorities ordered her husband to explain the circumstance. He reported that she had said good-bye to him and he was under the impression she had gone with the other settlers' wives. In reality she was in hiding, and it was her refusal to go to Nelson that induced the authorities to at once cease sending the women away. She leaves a family of six—four sons and 1 two daughters. These are Messrs. N. Okey (Messrs. Okey, Son, and Arnold), H. Okey, M.P., p. W. Okey (Messrs Okey and Rollo), Alf. Okey, of Greymouth, Mrs. P. Stohr, of New Plymouth, and Mrs. Leonard Bullot, of Sydney.
