TOWN PLANNING.
ARCHITECTS' VIEWS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. Speaking at tho annual dinner of the Institute of Architects, Mr. Morton, city engineer, made some pertinent remarks on the necessity of the co-opera-tion of architects in town-planning and other city improvements. He thought architects could render very important assistance in this respect in schemes of improvement. Architects should have a say in the erection of all buildings, and this would do a great deal towards the betterment of the city. " I am hoping," he added, " the day will come when there will bo compulsory registration of architects and no building will be erected except under the design and supervision of a thoroughly competent man." In 'his reply, the president of the institute, Mr. A. Atkins, said, the question of registration had been previously debated, and they hoped to makes a good step in the direction of its accomplishment. He felt the time was coming when architects could take part in schemes for town-planning in a wider sense than in the mere erection of buildings. He suggested, in regard to workmen's homes, that the governing body, whether the State or municipality, should purchase at first cost a block suitable for the purpose, and then invite architects to propound a scheme to deal with that block.
