DECREASE IK CROPPING AREAS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. Returns in the Gazette show that the area under wheat is 330,389 acres, an increase of 83,100 acres; oats, 593,390 acres, a decrease of 153,324 acres; barley, 31,831 acres, a decrease of 14,435 acres. The total area under crop is 1,015,882 acres, a decrease of 008,887 acres. Root and green crops show 713,082 acres, a decrease of 92,239 acres. The total land in occupation is 40,238,120 acres, an increase of 2,033,777 acres. As no collection of statistics was made last year the comparison is with the previous season. The average yields were: Wheat 25.73 bushels, oats 33,41 bushels, barley 27.68* bushels, potatoes 4.87 tons. The decreases arc accounted for by the drought and the increase of dairying and sheep-farming.
