THE LICENSING QUESTION.
A LIVELY MEETING. By Telegraph— Press Association. Wanganui. Tuesday. An extraordinarily lively meeting, marked by a unique* incident, was held at Aramoho last evening, when Mr. W. •I. Maguirc. under engagement to the latea Licensed ictuallcrs' Association, addressed a crowded audience in support of the trade. Hundreds were unable to gain admission. From the outset it apparent (hat the meeting was largely hostile to Mr. Maguirc, who spoke amid a fire of interruptions. the strain of which, combined with Ihe greai heat of the close night, almost overpowered him. He struggled pluckilv on. but when three-parts through his address, and when the audience seemed to he getting out of hand, the P.ev. George Trcgcar, a visiting no-license advocate whom Mr. Maguirc had attacked in very vigorous terms, appealed to the audience to give Mr. Maguirc a fair hearing, intimating that lie would reply to (lie charges made against, hmiself'hiler on. Mr Maguirc thanked Mr. Tregear for his action, and continued his address, hut, the interruptions continued, and finally. when on the verge of collate, and ''i ■'! y,<\ T : ' "V ' J , >l.i;-ttlrc was compelled to close t!ie in;?. Mr. Tregear then followed with a few minute*' vigorous speech in rebuttal of the charges made against him. and afterwards addressed a large crowd outside the hall.
