RAILWAY PRIVILEGE TICKETS.
PROFESSOR CHARGED WITH EVASION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Saturday. Professor Mills was charged at the S.M. Court to-day that he, being the holder of a ticket issued by the Railway Department for press reporting purposes, used the ticket for another purpose, and that he travelled on the railway with intent to evade payment of the proper fare. He pleaded not guilty. The prosecution poiuted out that the ticket was issued to one Reardon, editor of the Weekly Herald, a condition being that it was to be used exclusively for press reporters. Professor Mills travelled from Auckland to Wellington on the ticket. Mr. Reardon gave evidence to the effect that Mills was not exclusively employed as a reporter on the Herald, but during his engagement as a lecturer it was part, of his duty to contribute to the paper. Witness felt that he was to blame, and not Mills. The second charge was withdrawn, and Mills pleaded guilty to the first charge, and waß fined £3 and costs £2 2s. The magistrate said that technically Mills was guilty, but the fault really lay with Reardon.
