V.R.C. SPRING MEETING. I WILARI WINS THE DiERBY. I By Telegraph—Press Association. Received 5, 6.40 p.m. , Fleinington, November 5. After a bleak and wintery week, brilliant sunshine and a south breeze usher- 1 «1 in Derby Day. By noon the sun was hoit, and the crowd almost equalled the numbers at some past Cup days, and the stands, too, were crowded. A bright show of spring costumes was to be seen, the whole making a brilliant effect. Lord' and Lady Dudley and Sir John and Lady Puller each brought a big crowd of visitors. The course was in good order, though not favorable for estab-
felling records. The racing programme was particularly attractive. Additional interest centred this year in the decision of the t-hree-year-ald premiership, also the classic race, as a guide to which the three-year-olds running in the Oup and the mile weight-for-age race, was also a 'big factor. It was regarded as particularly unfortunate that Malt King was unable to again battle with Oomedy King, especialy in the light of late gallops. Malt King this morning did five furlongs in lmin 2 ! / 2 soe, six in lmin lfeec, 7 in lmin 42% sec, a mile in lmin 42sec, 9 furlongs in lmin 57sec. The Maribyrong Plajte, known as the two-year-olds' Derby, brought out the best lot of juveniles yet seen. Altogether it was an exciting day's sport. The Derby proved a fine race, particularly in the last half-mile, the finish being exciting and causing great enthusiasm. Results: Maiden Plate, of 300 sovs; 1 mile.— Elvanite 1, Mamen 2, Wassail 3.
