SYDNEY STRIKE ENDED
MEN RETURN TO WORK. BIG MASS MEETING. By Cfable —Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, November 4. Mr. Spence, member of the House of Representatives and president of the Australian Workers' Union, declared that no union could support the wharf laborers' action, which was reprehensible from any viewpoint. The council of the Waterside Workers' Union has forwarded a resolution to be read at to-day's meeting, regretting the men's action, and calling upon them forthwith to resume work on the terms of the agreement honorably entered into. Sydney. November 4. About 3000 attended the wharf laborers' meeting, but another 1000 were unable to get in. It was decided, on the show of hands, to return to work on Monday. The inter-State men realised that they had no sympathy for the deepsea men, and the latter 6tate that they have no grievance. Ml'. Carmichael addressed the meeting, and urged them to return home and submit the dispute to arbitration. RESUMPTION PROPOSED. AND HOWLED DOWN. Received 5, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, November 6. At the wharf laborers' meeting an extremely rowdy section of young men howled down speakers proposing the resumption of work. Dee-sea men predominated. They decided to accept Mr. Carmichael's advice.
Mr. Carmichael, in an address, declared the continuance of the strike would mean a blow to unionism, and possibly, a death blow to the Labor Government.
The vote resulted in a majority approximating six to one favoring return to work. Tiv> shipowners express satisfaction, but state that they fail to see what grounds there can be for arbitration, as an agreement is already in existence, and the conditions are not different to the conditions existing when the agreement was entered upon'.
