CORRESPONDENCE.
RAIIOTU SCHOOL. To the Editor, flir,—A local in your issue of the sth inst., re resignation of Rahotu school committee, appears to have been misreported. The facts of the case are as follows: Out head teacher having retired on superannuation, the Board submitted the name of one lady, requesting the committee's recommendation in the matter. The committee, after careful consideration and consultation with parents, particularly recommended the appointment of a male' teacher as headmaster of our school. Subsequently the democratic (?) reply came: "Miss has been appointed head teacher of your school." The .committee were thm* awakened to a realisation of their position and duty, viz., "To see that the school is swept." They feel it is high time school committees are swept away or else given more administrative power. The committee did not for one moment question the merits or demerits of the lady appointed, but the whole tiling hinged on the arbitrary action of (he Board, as will be shown by the letter and resolution forwarded to the Board as follows: ''The school committee met last wight and discussed the action of the Board in appointment made, not even a. letter of explanation being tendered them. Had the exigency of the case necessitated the Board making a temporary appointment until such tiino as the committee could have been eonsuited or their wishes given effect to, w<! could have understood it. Consequently the following resolution was passed unanimously: That this committee having considered the action of the Board in the appointment of head teacher, and the arbitrary action of the Board in entirely ignoring the committee's recommendation in the matter, wo tender our resignation in a body as « protest against such action." Now, Sir, do you wonder at our democratic natures rising, being in what we thought a democratic country? We there is room (for reform, and think this matter may very well be made a plank in our coming election. Thanking you for so far trespassing on your valuable space.— We are, etc..
