MATES LEAVE THEIR BOATS. By Telegraph— Pre** Awwifction. Christchurch, Last Night. The two mates of the steamer Storm,, which arrived at Lyttelton early this morning, having given twenty-four hours' notice of the termination of their agreement, were paid off to-day. Efforts are being made this afternoon to obtain the services of two other mates in order that the vessel might sail for Dunedin. It is understod that on arrival of the steamer Holmdale, from •Grcymouth, tomorrow, the mates will be pa'id off, their twenty-four hours' notice having expired.

COXIFBREXOE IX WELLINGTON'. Wellington, Last Sight. A conference was held at the Merchant Service Guild offices to-day between the. representatives of owners of .small vessels nffected ihy the recent award of the Arbitration Court in the case of mates and members of the Guild. The proceedings were not open to the press. It is understood the owners submitted certain proposals. The conference then adjourned. A meeting of owners was held this afternoon to still further consider matters at issue. Uip to the present the position is unchanged. The Guild has informed the owners thmt it declines tQ accept the final proposals submitted by them. The owners will meet to-morrowr morning to discuss- the situation, and decide what steps should be taken.

Mr. Rogers, general manager of the' Anchor line, states that the crews of the WWerley, Kennedy and Alexander were paid off at Nelson to-day. Those of the Waimea, Knitoa and NiJaitt will be paid off to-morrow, no mates being available.. A few vessels are laid up at Wellington. There is a likelihood of the crews of several steamers being paid off within the next few days, ,„ *•" ___, . ■••*' ANCHOR FLEET LAID UP. Christchurch. Last Night. By to-morrow the whole of the Anchor Company's fleet wilt be laid up here, pending the settlement of the coastal officers' dispute.
