'['he Walwmi County Council to-day appointed Mr. J. S. Whiteside, of Opotiki, to the position of county, engineer. A Perth cablegram reports that Mr. Taylor, M.P., the leader of the antiopium party, is a passenger by the Orsova. A London cable states that Dr. Itoytf Carpenter, who resigned the Bishopric of llipon, lias accepted the Cawmry oi' Westminster. Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., who is relieving here during the absence of Mr. H. 8. Fitzherbert, S.M., on sick leave, presided at the court sitting yesterday. He returned to his duties toosoon, and has now suffered a serious relapse. The death occurred at Palmerston yes* terday of .lames Skerman, one of the) pioneers of the district. Mr. SkcrmrtU arrived in New Zealand in tile ship Himalaya in 18/fi, and settled in the Palmerston district, lie was prominently connected with the early history of the dairying industry in the Manawatu, and established the first cheese factory in the district. Mr. Skerman celebrated his golden wedding in 11)02, and his wife who accompanied him from England died in 1905.—Press Association.
Mr. Frank Wilding, a great great great grandson of Captain Cook, was a passenger by the Macedonia, which reached Fremantle last week. He served with the Shackleton expedition, and was one of the quartet of intrepid men who penetrated the Antarctic continent and carried the British flag to within 87, miles of the South Pole. In the course of an interview Sir. Wilding paid he was going again, in charge of either the second or third landing party.
