DEVELOPING ELECTRICITY

THE GOYT.RXMKXT'S IDEALS. By Telegraph—Presa Association. Wellington. Last Night. A deputation from Pahiatua to-day asked the lion. R. McKenzie, Minister for Public Works, if the Government would consider the Makuri Falls as a possible source of hydro-electric powerMr. W. W. McCardle, Mayor of Palliatuti, said the Borough Council was faced wilh the question of either taking over the gas works from a private company or getting electrical power. Mr. Nash, Mayor of Palmerston, and others also spoke. Replying, the Minister said the Government had to look at the question' from a national and not a local point of view. To start developing small schemes would lead to failure, Larger schemes were the better for the whole country. The Government was considering the development of the Like Waikaremoana scheme, which would not cost much more than the Makuri scheme, and would supply the whole of the Xorth Island. He was satisfied that electricity was going to revolutionise our ideas of railway work in New Zealand. Probably this session the Government would ask for authority to start to construct a small electrical branch as an experiment.
