<From Our Own Correspondent.) The funeral of the late Sergeant McCarthy took place here yesterday. The old warrior had seen service in many lands, and one of his chief troubles of late years was a bad leg, the result of tin old wound received "in one of his many "lights for the Hag." He was accorded a- military funeral—or as near an approach to one a* we. could get. A small detachment of the local Territorials, some half-a-dozen, under Captain Leech, formed a firing party. The coffin was borne to the cemetery on a gun carriage, with an Union Jack for a pall. A number of old Ta-ranoki veterans acted as bearers and pall bearers. The Inglewooil Town Hand turned out, a.nd headed the procession, playing the "Dead Miurch." Following the coffin were most of the. business men of the town, and many others, also a large number of the Convent school children. The service ait the graveside was conducted bv the Rev. Father McManus. A very touching incident at the close of the service was the. sounding of the "Last Post" by an old comrade of the sergeant's, Mr. Wa-Hver, who bad come from Waitara ] for the purpose of thus tendering -this ; last murk of respect to an old soldier -, friend. After the bugle call had been ' sounded the firing party fired three vol- 1 leys. Much sympathy is expressed I on every hand for the widow 1 who is left. She, too, has followed the s llag, in barracks and camp, at home and abroad, in times of peace, and air on active service she has been comr ~» as well as wife.
