VETERANS' CLAIMS
k ONLY 93 RF.COMUKXDKD. WHAT THE STATE HAS PREVIOUSLY DONE. Wellington, Thursday. The report upon naval and military claims in respect to services in New Zealand was presented to the House yesterday, summarising the results of enquiries which stipendiary magistrates all over New Zealand have made during the past year. There were 007 claims, but only thirty-nine were successful. The largest number of claims, 189, came from Auckland district, and only six were recommended for acceptance. One claim each was accepted from Thames, Rotorua, Whangarei and (iisborne; two each from Wunganui, Christchurch and Dunedin, three from Palmerston North, four from Napier, live from AVellington (out of thirty claimants) eleven from New Plymouth; and none from other districts. OVER £70,000 PAID. A lengthy review of the past legislation, which had as its object the rewarding of veterans, is included in the report. This shows that as the result of successive enquiries the following claimants were admitted and rewarded:— Year Claimants. Awarded. £ 1872 700 13,645 1882. 119 3,360 1887 234 7,440 1589 to 1892 921. 42,567 1590 110 3,485
Total 2084 £ 70,707 Crown grants of land and money were issued to claimants in Auckland, Taranaki, Hawke's Bay, Wellington, and Nelson provinces, so that altogether a total of 7692 persons received compensation amounting to £70,707, and scrip for £5730 used in the purchase of land and Crown grants fer 34(1,112 acres. The present enquiry excluded claims from persons who had previously received grants of land or money for naval, military or volunteer services, it being held that once a person received compensation the door should not again be opened for his benefit.
