GROWTH OF POPULATION
CENSUS RETUHXS. One of the census returns for 1011 was presented to Parliament yesterday. Tim population of the Xorth Island is 303,729, and of the South Island 444,120; Stewart Island. 357; Chatham Islands. 258; Konnadec Islands, 4; making a total for the Dominion (exclusive of Maoris and inhabitants of the annexed Pacific Islands) of ],008,408. There are 531.010 males and 470,558 females in the Dominion. Included in the total numbers there are, 1475 male half-castes and 1404 female, half-castes, living as Europeans. There are also 2342 Chinamen and SS Chinese women included. There are 210,734 occupied dwellings. 15,234 unoccupied dwellings, and 1508 buildings in Xew Zealand. The tents and dwellings with canvas roofs uumbef no fewer than 4091. The wooden dwellings are largely in excess of any other, viz., 200,760. The number of females to every 100 males during the various censuses'from 1858 to the present day is as follows:--70.41, 02,10, 01.53, ■05.7;-,,' 70.52. 75.17, 70 40 81.72, 83.23, 88.20. 80.31, 00.33, 88.0o!\ 80.57. The. number of persons (o a square mile has increased from 1.041 in 1804 to 9.090 at the present time. The number of persons to an inhabited dwelling docs not vary very much. It is practically the same now as at was in 1858. namely. 4.00. The population and increases since last census in the different provincial districts are as follow: Totals. Increases.
