DISTRICT NEWS.
RAHOTU. 4From Otv Own Correspondent.) His Lordship the Bishop of Auckland (Dr. Crossley) visited llaliotu on Saturday last. Accompanied by the Rev. 0. Addeii'brooke, he arrived here during the afternoon, and in the evening held a miisionary meeting in the hall, where there was a fair attendance. An interesting address was attentively listened to, and at its conclusion several mission boxes were taken by members. Before dispersing, refreshments, provided by the ladies of the congregation, were handed around. There was also a good attendance at early communion on Sunday morning, whilst the church was crowded at the* eleven- o'clock confirmation service, when ten candidates received the rite of confirmation.
On Sunday afternoon a gig containing three small boys driving to Sunday school turned the comer leading to the church so rapidly and abruptly that it capsized and distributed its occupants along the road. A shaft and some holiness broke, enabling the horse to get clear, and it bolted, jumping auto another paddock, where it was caught. None of the boys were hurt. The many friends of Mr. A. Baker will regret to hear that he is at present confined to the New Plymouth hospital. It is, however, hoped that he will soon be about again. Local (farmers, along with those oi other parts, appear to be in for a splendid season. Prices for butter and cheese are exceptionally good, the Itahotu factory having secured 0 5-10 d for it* season's output of cheese, the highest price received along the coast, and indeed anywhere lse, except at Lowgarth, which lias received 63„d. The mild rainy weather we have had lately is also causing the grass to come away well, and there should thus be a good supply of milk to take advantage of the big prices. Altogether the farmer lias good reason to look pleased. It is astonishing the number of cattle and horses that graze on the Main road by night. A cyclist between New Plymouth and Eahotu the other evening counted over seventy on various parts, including many working bullocks. Some night an accident will be chronicled as the result of thus practice, when perhaps steps will be taken to prevent it. Hie Transport Company's steam motor waggon appears to be working satisfactorily. It is understood that a second one will be on the road shortly, of which Mr. J. Mackay, formerly of the Rahotu dairy factory, will have charge. On Wednesday night a firewall ?ocial is to be tendered to Mr. J. T. Campbell, who has been headmaster of the Rahotti school for many years, but is now retiring on superannuation. The question of his successor is exercising the minds of many. The news that "a lady has Im>ch appointed was a disappointment t<y many, who had hoped that a young man would be forthcoming; wlio, upholding the prestige of the school from a scholastic point of view, ■would be able to associate with the lads in the playground', and imbue them with a lively interest in those healthy games which tend to make manly men. There is, however, apparently "a great dearth of male teachers at present, and, judging by the few lads that are entering the teaching profession now-a-days," the scarcity will be intensely felt in the near future. •RAIIOTU ATHLETIC! CLTJi.
The annual mooting of the Rahotu Athletic Club was held at Mir. Hood's hotel on Saturday evening, ■when there was an attendance of about 20 members, Mr. S. J. Oandish presiding. The balance-sheet showed that the -loss over last year's meeting had amounted to £9 10s, and that the club's credit at the j bank stood at .£l3 2s 4d. It was unanimously decided to hold sports again on New Year's Day, and those present agreed that it would be necessary for every one connected with the club to put their shoulders to the wheel and work with the sole object of running a successful meeting. A lengthy list of vice-presidents were elected, and given power to add to their number. The twenty present in the room accepted the position, and promised U> donate the customary 10s fid, and it is confidently expected that the remainder will do likewise, thereby materially fctu'eivyhlicning the club's finances.
