OBITUARY.
SIR ROBERT HART. By Gable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 21, 10 p.m. London, September 21. Sir Robert Hart, M.A..L.L.D., G.C.M.C., late Inspector General of Customs in China, is dead.
Deceased was born in the County of Armagh, Ireland, in 1835, was educated in Tauton, Dublin and Belfast, entered the Consular service in China in 1855, rising to a high position. He was granted special permission to resign and accept an appointment in the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs in 18y!), gaining in 1861 the position of Inspector-General, and exercised more influence in Chinese affairs than any other white man. He retired hut a short time ago. He was awarded decoration after decoration, at the hands of China (which had the fullest confidence in him), .Britain, and practically every other European country. Mrs. Osborne, wife of the Rev. Osborne, of New Plymouth, was a sister the late Sir Robert Hart.
