mm THE TROUBLES IN SOUTH AFRICA. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 4, 10.40 p.m. Capetown, September 4. Lord Gladstone, Governor-General, was entertained at lunch at Salisbury. In the course of a speech he referred to the decision in the Umtali case. Nobody, he said, regretted the difference which had arisen with the people of Southern Rhodesia more keenly ,tlian himself, but it was the difference over the merits of a songle case rather than of a principle. There could be only one principle, namely, the inviolable sanctity of our women, coupled with distinct I justice and fair play to the subject races. (Applause). He emphasised- the j number of criminal pases wherein white and hlaek had been involved during the past year, and suggested that the machinery of the trials might require overhauling.! lle eulogised the revised system adopted by Natal.
