WORKMEN ON STRIKE

ON THE STRATFORD-ONGARUE RAILWAY. It is reported from Whangamomona that 150 meu <yi the Stratford-Ongarue railway works hare gone out on strike, insufficient pay being the cause. Work on the Whangamomona tunnel is held up, and it is feared the action of the men will affect other workers on the line. In the House of Representatives on Thursday Mr. J. 15. Hine asked the Minister for Public Works whether he had any information to the effect that the workmen at the Whangamomona tunnel had ceased work on account of the smallness of their pay. The work was hard, and there had been seriotis accidents. The men should be well paid for such work. The Hon. R. McKenzie said notice should he given of the question. He had received no such information.
