THE DEFENCE SCHEME

ANTI-MILITARISTS AT CHRISTCHURCH. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. 'Mr. L.. P. Christie, secretary of the Anti-Militarist League, speaking in respect of the meeting held in the Choral Hall on Monday night, states that notwithstanding the siege outside the hall, the meeting was conducted successfully. "We were enabled to admit about 900 people," he continued, "thirty of whom were college students. Then the police prevented us from admitting any more to the building. The resolutions were moved and carried unanimously, with the exception of the students, who voted against the motions. The crowd were kept at bay outside while the meeting was being held, and it was not until the windows were broken and the beam thrown in that the water was turned on" "The flag-tearing episode was not seen by the people outside the hall, the flag being torn by an irresponsible lad within. Furthermore, the turning on of the water was the act of an irresponsible person." The Anti-Militarist Council propose holding another meeting next week, when measures will be taken to prevent a recurrence of the scenes of Monday.
