A MURDEROUS CHIEF. By Cable—Press Association —Oopyright. Sydney, August 2. The Powerful has returned from her Island cruise. At the island of Espiritu Santo the chief Thingeroo had sworn to exterminate all whites and friendly natives in the island. He murdered eight natives and wounded one white. MISSIONARY SHOT DEAD. Brisbane, August 2. Mr. Daniells, of the Evangelical Mission, has been shot dead while sitting in his verandah at Uru, in Malaita, one of the Solomon Islands. A PROFESSOR'S THEORY. Brisbane, August 2. Professor MacMillan Brown, who has returned from a visit to the Solomons, is of opinion, as the result of his investigations, that the Solomons form the key to the question of the peopling of the Pacific. The presence of the European type of faces among the natives shows that a light-haired European race has gone into the Pacific.
