IN THE WAERARAPA DISTRICT.
Masterton, Wednesday. ! Information has been received at Masterton that the weather on the East Coast has been very rough. From Castlepoint to Cape Tarakari (Palliscr Bay) the seas have been the heaviest experienced for many years. The Wairarapa. Lake is in flood, and hundreds of acres of low-lying country in the vicinity are under water.' Some mountain streams in the western Lake and Martinborough districts have scoured away a. considerable quantity of,, land which had been denuded of "trees! and had nothing to hold the soil together. Several householders at Masterton have had a trying time during the storm this week on account of surface water flowing into their dwellings. In three or four instances houses were completely surrounded by water. One family, in order to reach their abode dry-footed, had to climb along a fence, the water in front and at the sides of the buildin« being several inches deep. n
