DISASTROUS FLOODS

CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE IN BLENHEIM.. By Telegraph—Press Association. Blenheim, Wednesday. The Hood waters are now receding. The town presents an extremely filthy appearance. The water entered nearly every business place, and the people are now "busily engaged sweeping out mud and slush. In .some of the outlying parts of the town the water attained a depth of from live to six feet, and the people had to be removed from their homes to higher levels. In several places the protective banks gave way, allowing the water to pour into the town, while in others the Hood topped the high banks. A good number of horses and cattle perished, but there is no loss of life reported. Levin and Co. and the Union Company's premises were-'undermined and one of the interior walls collapsed. The water is still scouring out the foundations, and the building is in danger of collapsing. : A, far as can be ascertained, the farming districts have escaped the Hood. The railway service is suspended lndefini.dy. ■■•' HLCODS AND SNOW IN CANTERBURY. Christchurch, Wednesday.
