The Newcastle and Wallsend mine is idle owing to a strike of wheelers, who are demanding payment for small coal. Previously only round coal was paid for. Eight hundred men are affected, both miners and men wheelers. When urged to reconsider their decision the boys remained firm in their demands. PUBLIC WOIiKS TN NEW SOUTH WALES., Sydney. July 13. SHOCK IXG NEGLECT. Melbourne, July 13. A shocking case of neglect hits been discovered. William Brown, a bootmaker, was fined £2O for having neglected to provide for two young ehil- 1 di'en. When taken to the hospital they were so hungry that they tried to eat *oap. A dipper was the only cooking utensil in the house.
