CORRESPONDENCE

CORONATION DAY AND THE SCHOOLS. To the Editor. Sir, —I see by a local in this morning's paper that "representations have been made to the chairman of the Education Board that there would be a better chance of a good muster of children at the Coronation celebrations if they were to attend school as usual that morning," and that "arrangements have now been made that the holidays shall start on June 22nd, Coronation Day, the children assembling as usual that morning." Now, that is all very well for town schools, but I should like to know what chance children or teachers in country schools have of attending any celebrations if school is to open until twelve o'clock. The state of ailairs is, however, even worse than vonr local leads us to believe, for this morning « circular was received from the Board stating that schools are to open as usual on Coronation Day, and that the holidays are to begin on Friday, .I\inc 23rd. The circular does not say that there is a half-holiday on| Thursday, nor that the holidays shall' start on the 22nd. Just fancy thern being no holiday on such an occasion as the coronation of our Kingl Inmost places the children arc being given an extra week's holiday, but in Taranaki thej' are to go to school as usual in order that they may be presented with two-penny half-penny medals! It is to be hoped that a further circular will be sent out stating definitely that schools are to be closed at 3.30 p.m. on Wednesday, the 2lst, thus giving the children t«'« extra days' holiday, ffhich I am sure they would appreciate to a vastly greater extent than they will a tin medal.—T am, etc COUNTRY TEACHER. 1 June 12.
