HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
PRESIDENT'S REPORT. . The report of the president (Mr. C. H. McCahey), to be presented at the annual meeting of the Horticultural Society to-morrow night, is as follows: In presenting my report I have to congratulate the members on the year's work. Two shows were held, and, as will be seen by the balance-shoet, both were a financial success. The rose show held in November—thanks to Mrs. Ellerm and Messrs. X. King, J. 11. Freethy, J. Gibson, and others, was a very creditable display, and won praises from all who attended. Although the show was a success, I very much doubt if it shoulu be repeated another year, for the following reasons: —First: The committee are convinced that the rose show being held so close to the spring show is detrimental to the latter; second: that people, could not be expected to strip their garden of flowers for exhibition purposes Ibnly. The entries for the spring show were quite equal to those of previous years, and had we had the rose exhibits T)f Messrs. Wcightman and Laird and j Son would have been much in advance. I Tne balance sheet shows a credit balance of .£l2 9s Id for the year just ended, but we are really £l9 7s in advance of i last year, for the reason that, whereas |we actually lost ,€!) lis on the year's working in 190!), during the year just | past we have made £9 16s. The year 1911 being tne centenary of the pansy, i the Rev. Kellow kindly offered to write I the history of that flower. His offer was | accepted, and the article was printed in the Daily News. Our best thanks are due 'to Mr. Kellow, and the society should endeavor to make pansies a leading feature at tkeir next show. SeTeral proposals will be brought before the annual meeting for discussion: First, to alter the date of the spring show to the middle of November; second, to abandon the rose show altogether; third, to have a summer show in February or March. These will require careful consideration. It is very disappointing to see so few subscribing members at the annual meeting. I therefore invite all to attend and assist to decide these important questions. Our best thanks are due to the< judges and stewards who carried out their duties faithfully. In conclusion, I thank the committee for the support given me during my term of office. I trust any mistakes I may have made will be attributed to my anxiety to fur-1 ther the interests oi the society.
