SHIP REGULATIONS.

The following regulations for the protection of life and property on vessels appear in to-night'a Gazette:—When cargo is being handled on board a vessel the master shall see that the following things are done: All hatch beams shall be moved clear of the hatchway; the deck approaches to the hatch ladders shall be kept clear of all obstructions; all pipes which are laid above the surface of the deck shall he properly covered up, so us not to be an obstruction or impediment to the men working on deck; the straps of all baskets used in working cargo shall be thoroughly examined at louse once a month and restropped when necessary, and entry of such examination shall be made in the official log in the case of vessels on which such leg is kept; all cargo derricks and their gear shall be kept in proper order; a supply of pure drinking water shall be provided and kept in a proper receptacle for the use of the men engaged in working the cargo; all persons having control of hydaulic cranes which are used in working cargo on vessels shall see that the levers have pins in proper working order; any person who commits a breach of either of the above regulations is liable to a fine not exceeding £IOO.
