SAD DOMESTIC TRAGEDY
MURDER AND DOUBLE SUICIDE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 21, 5.5 p.m. Sydney, May 20. A family consisting of a man and wife and son (aged 8) were found dead in a residence in North Sydney. They were lying with the backs close together, a bottle of poison being alongside. The police think the parents first murdered, their child and then suicided. Their name is supposed to Basterd, and the people are thought to be recent arrivals from New Zealand. The house was bare of furniture, and the people were in great financial difficulties. OUT OF WORK AND DESTITUTE. Received 22, 1 a.m. Sydney, May 21. Deceased, who was named Segar Stafford Basterd, a chemist, and his wife, Evelyn, with their son, came from Wellington or Auckland. He was out of work and absolutely destitute. He wrote to tie police asking them to come and remove their bodies, as they were taking prussic acid.
