The Standard states that after the reporters left Monday's meeting at the Colonial Institute Sir .John Downer, a member of the South Australian Legislative Council, was invited by the chairman to speak, and in the course of his remarks referred to the Australian referendum. Lord Carrington (sharply): We cannot have politics liere in any circumstance';. This is a non-political meeting. There must be. no politics while T am in the chair. An impressive silence indicated the sympathy of the meeting with Sir John Downer, who apologised that he had unintenionally offended, and said, "I am sorry T have done so. and still more Sony that you called ou me to speak.''
