A "MESSING ADVISER."
SOME FUN* JX THE COMMON'S. By cable. —Press Association. —Copyright London, May 10. In the House of Commons, in reply to Captain P. A. Give, Mr. F. D. Aeland, Financial Secretary of the War Office, stated that the first holder of the new office of messing adviser to the War Office at a salary of £390 per annum would be Colonel Morgan, a retired officer.
He further explained, in reply to an additional question, that Colonel Morgan had been invited to retire as the result of the investigation by the Butler committee and the finding of the Royal Commission which was appointed at the close of the Boer war. No conniption had been found against Colonel Morgan, who was only guilty of undoubted culpability under the Army regulations, but, as he was a very able man, better qualified than anyone else to do the worli, there was no reason why he should not be employed.
Captain Clive: Are there not others qualified who have not been found in any way culpable?—(Cheers).
Mr. Aeland: Xo. That is exactly the point—(lronical Opposition laughter). Colonel Morgan is an officer of exceptional ability, and it is felt lie can do the work better than anyone else. FURTHER CRITICISM. Received 11. 11.15 p.m. London, May 11. The Daily News fails to see why Colonel Morgan was selected for a remunerative responsible administrative post.
