Earl Carrington presided at Sir George Reid's address at the Colonial Institute on "the past, present and future of Australia." Among those present who spoke were Lord Denhnni, Governorelect of the Commonwealth, Sir John Forrest, and Messrs Downes, Talbot and McGowen. Sir George Reid paid a tribute to Lord and Lady Denham. and said he looked forward with great confidence to Lord Denham having a distinguished ear«"r in Australia. The Pall Mall Gazette says that immigration statistics were a feature of Sir George Reid's paper. The gain of 37,500 in 1010 was only a little better than nothing when the vast spaces were considered. It was still the urgent duty of the State Government' to encourage immigration.
