During the last act of a performance at the Empire Palace Theatre, Edinburgh, which the King intended to visit, the stage properties caught fire. The screen was instantly dropped, and the. house was emptied in admirable order. Many of the performers were in their 'rooms. Some fainted. The majority escaped safely, but Lafayette and several members of his company were overwhelmed. Seven bodies, including LaI fayette's, have been recovered from the stage. The fire was confined to the back of the theatre, which collapsed.
