The first Oriental rug factory established in the Southern Hemisphere has been started here.- . , • - i NATIVE LAND .PURCHASE. Wellington, Saturday. The Native Land Purchase Board, at a meeting this 'week, had under offer 464.787 acres. It was decided to complete the purchase of 2577 acres. In regard to the balance, it was explained that the land is held in common, and before a purchase can be effected meetings of the owners must be held ana the offer submitted. Others offers of 12,800 acres were declined, and further enquiries are to be made concerning 85,000 acres.
DUXEDLK HOSPITAL. ' Dunedin, Saturday. A movement initiated- by Mr. Hugh Ward and Miss Grace Pal'otta to provide a women's pavilion at the hospital has been taken up very enthusiastically, over £IOOO being promised already." A JEWELLERY THEFT RECALLED. Auckland, Saturday. The police have been advised that Edward Rodger*, alias Valentine Turner, and a woman giving the name of Mrs. .Rodgers, were arrested upon the arrival of the mail steamer (at San Francisco?) from New Zealand, having in their possession the whole of the jewellery stolen from Kohn's shop in Queen-street, Auckland, on March 10, when the premises were entered by a wjndow from the roof of adjacent premises, and the contents of the window and cases cleared, despite the fact that the shop, as usual, was left fully lighted, and in open view of anyone passing.
