THE LICENSING QUESTION

MR. THOMSON'S CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. At a meeting of the Christchurch Pronation League held to-night, Mr. J. McCombs referred to the challenge reiterated by Mr. Wm. Thomson in a recent telegram from Greymouth. Mr. McCombs said that Mr. Thomson's chal- ( lence was made in October, 1908, and in the same month the Christchurch Prohibition accepted the challenge, which was that Mr Thomson would give £IOOO if his figures were proved incorrect. Mr. Thomson had not yet replied to the League's acceptance of his challenge, or to the counter-challenge made by the League in November, 1908. The following cable was sent by the League to the Governor of .Portland, Maine:—"Liquor party here allege more drunkenness and crime in your State than in licensed States in proportion to population. Is this true?"

The following reply was received:— "Allegations of liquor party in my judgment absolutely false.—William T. Cobb, Governor, State of Maine."
