MAKETAWA. (From' Our Own Correspondent). The second annual picnic of the Maketawa factory suppliers, which took place on Thursday last, struck adverse weather, but, notwithstanding, a very enjoyable day's amusement was afforded those who attended. The drizzly rain which fell until about 10.30 a.m. left the afternoon overcast and threatening, which affected the attendance considerably. There were somewhere about 150 i-young and old present. Boys' and girls' i races were provided, and Mr. Thomas, y who attended to that part of the pio- ) gramme, had his hands full. All the eye.nts had a fair number of entrants, and the finishes were very exciting, the final of .th© shareholders' handicap being, particularly so. The sack races provided 'some real fun, the competitors entering into the spirit of the affair in a wholehearted manner. Mr. Joe Brown, the judge, and Messrs. F. Brown and E. Taylor, the joint secretaries, were attentive to she wants of everyone, Whether competitor or looker-on —in fact, the commtitee as a whole deserves great, credit for the way things were managed in the face of such disappointing, weather., The opinion was "frequently expressed that future picnics should be arranged for an earlier period. A spacious marquee was fixed in which a committee of ladies dispensed a choice assortment of eatables, the quality of which was much appreciated.
