WAITARA NEWS
(From our Own Correspondent). A lire occurred about 11 o'clock yesterday morning in Mr. M. Jones' sash and door factory. The alarm was not given till the fire had apparently a good hold of the building. Within a very few moments of the bell ringing, the fire brigade got to work, and soon had the fire under control. There was a fine pressure of water on, and just as the flames had been subdued, there was a break in the valve, throwing the hydrant off the stand and almost knocking: over the man in charge. A great column j of water was sent up some twonty feet, looking like a geyser, but fortunately the necessity for water was over. The fire started in the upstairs part, of the factory, evidently among some shavings. There was a good deal oi stock in the way of mouldings, etc., on hand, and these, with a quantity of timber, were destroyed, but the machinery' was saved. The building was gutted where the fire originated, but had it not been for the splendid water supply and efficient work of the brigade, the whole of the factory would have beenj destroyed, as well as the offices, showroom and sheds adjoining. Mr. Jones had no insurance on either the stock or the building. ' Tlie Waitara Rowing Club held a very successful and enjoyable social on Easter Monday night, when the medals presented by Mr. H. N. Cossar were handed to the winners.
