BOXING
TOURNAMENT AT STRATFORD. There was a moderate attendance at the Stratford Town Hall last night. A number of the competitors failed to put in an appearance, but, although some of the bouts were very one-sided, tier# was a £ood evening's sport. Mr. J. J, Stagpoole was the referee, Mr. A. L. Chappell secretary, and the other duties were well carried out by members of the Taranaki Boxing Association. Results:— Bantan-weight.—Warren Oliver, only entrant. Feather-weight.—First bout: R. Oliver beat Clapham; Warren Oliver sparred a bye with Gibbs. Final Gibbs beat B. Oliver, a knock-out. Light-weight.—Maxwell beat GouM (Patea). Gould was no match for the New Plymouth man, and the referee stopped the fight. Middle-weight.—Whitaker and Perry fought six rounds, a draw. There was a good deal of clinching in this, & very, hard go. Heavy-weight.—Hawkins was the only competitor, Osborne and McCormiek not putting in an appearance. HawkiM fought a bye with Russell, of Hawera, the latter being entirely out of form, and also 'gave an exhibition spar witb A. Lovegrove. An exhibition spar between Maxwell and S. Lovegrove completed the programme.
