THE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

OTAGO'S SYNOD. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Dunedin, Last Night. The Presbyterian Synod of Otago and Southland unanimously carried a motion approving of the efforts of the University Senate to get Parliament to pass the necessary legislation for granting a degree in Divinity, and asking every Presbytery in the country to pass similar resolutions. St. Margaret's College, established hy the Presbyterian Church for the accommodation of lady students from the country, was opened by the Svnod this afternoon. The Rev. Jas. Clarke, of Palmerston, was appointed moderator for the next year. In the evening a discussion took place with reference to a suggestion made by Lieut. Thorns that congregations should combine in the matter of securing officers for cadet corps in their districts. It was decided to instruct presbyteries to make what provision thev thought desirable to meet the situation created by the Government's compulsory training scheme. An amendment by the Rev. A. Cameron that, the Synod advise congregations, as such, to stand aloof from the whole question, was lost by 20 votes to 12.
